Bera Test at Times Health Care

BERA Test

The Bera Test (Brainstem Evoked Resonse Audiometry) , also called ABR [Auditory Brainstem Responses] , is a non invasive method used for the early detection of hearing loss in children .

Why Early Detection is important

• First 3 years are critical : The brain develops rapidly , and untreated hearing loss can cause long – term speech and learning delays .

• Silent Condition : Hearing problems are not always visible ;a child may look healthy but still have difficulty in hearing .

• Better results with early treatment : When detected early , interventions like hearing aids , cochlear implants, or therapy are far more effective .

Why child need BERA Test ?

1. Newborn hearing screening follow up : If your baby did not pass the initial hearing screening ( like the OAE Test ) , BERA helps confirm if there is real hearing loss.

2. Family history of hearing problem : If close relatives have hearing loss , your child may be at higher risk .

3. Medical risk factor :

• Premature birth
• Low birth weight
• Jaundice
• Birth complications
• Meningitis
• NICU stay can increase the chance of hearing loss

4. No or poor response to sounds : If your baby doesn’t startle at loud noises or doesn’t turn toward voices and sounds, BERA can find out if its due to hearing issues.

5. Speech or language delay : If your child is not babbling, speaking or responding to sound as expected , Audiologist may check hearing with a BERA test.

Age for children to begin BERA Testing ?

A BERA Test can be done at any age , even in newborns , because it doesn’t need the child’s cooperation . The timing depends on the child’s risk factor or sign of hearing problems .

• New born stage ( 0-1 month): If your baby fails the newborn hearing screening ( like OAE Test )

• Infant stage ( up to 1 year ): If your baby doesn’t respond to sound , doesn’t startle at loud noise, doesn’t recognize voices and if your baby is not babbling by 6 to 7 months .

• Toddler stage (1 to 3 years ): If there is delayed speech or unclear words and if your child often doesnot respond when called or made higher TV,radio Volume .

• BERA Testing can be performed at any age. How to prepare your child for BERA Test ?
Since this test is mainly for children , following the preparation guidelines is very important :

• Wash your child’s hair with shampoo the day before the test .
• Avoid applying hair oil, cream or gel.
• Your doctor may advise fasting for a few hours before the test ( especially for infants )
